Tom Yum Soup Singapore: Why Every Bowl at Thong Thai Bistro Starts From Scratch

Tom Yum Soup Singapore: Why Every Bowl Starts From Scratch

Tom Yum Soup is one of Thailand’s most famous dishes.

It is recognised around the world for its distinctive combination of hot, sour, fragrant and spicy flavours.

But there is one thing Chef June refuses to compromise on.

Every bowl starts from scratch.

At Thong Thai Bistro, we don’t prepare a large quantity of Tom Yum base in advance and keep it waiting for the next customer.

We don’t simply heat up a pre-made soup and add a few ingredients when an order arrives.

When your order reaches the kitchen, that’s when Chef June starts preparing your Tom Yum.

No Pre-Prepared Tom Yum Base

Preparing Tom Yum properly requires a combination of ingredients.

The distinctive flavour doesn’t come from one sauce or one packet.

It is built through multiple ingredients, including the familiar flavours of:

  • lemongrass;
  • galangal;
  • kaffir lime leaves;
  • fresh chillies;
  • lime;
  • and other Thai herbs and ingredients.

Each ingredient contributes something different.

Some provide fragrance.

Some provide heat.

Some bring acidity.

Some create depth.

When everything comes together, the result is the unmistakable character of a good Tom Yum Soup.

Chef June believes this process should begin when the customer places the order.

It is more work.

It requires more preparation.

And it takes more time.

But she will only do it this way.

A Bowl of Tom Yum Is Built, Not Simply Heated

There are shortcuts available in any kitchen.

A restaurant can prepare a large quantity of soup base in advance.

It can be portioned, stored and reheated throughout the day.

That is not how Chef June prepares our Tom Yum.

Each order is prepared individually.

That allows the ingredients, spice and final flavour to come together fresh.

It also means that one customer’s Tom Yum can be prepared differently from another’s.

Because not everyone enjoys the same level of heat. Enjoy Dine-INor Takeaway.

Choose Your Own Spice Level 🌶️

Thai food should be enjoyed.

And while Tom Yum is famous for its spicy character, we don’t believe every customer should suffer just to prove that they can eat spicy food!

At Thong Thai Bistro, you can choose:

🌶️ Bare Minimum Spicy

For diners who want the flavour of Tom Yum without too much heat.

🌶️ Less Spicy

A gentle amount of spice.

🌶️ Regular Spicy

For those who enjoy Tom Yum with its proper kick.

🌶️ Extra Spicy

For the brave!

The flavour remains important at every level.

Spice should add to the experience—not simply overpower everything else.

Choose What Goes Into Your Tom Yum

We also give diners a choice of ingredients.

Depending on your preference, you can enjoy Tom Yum with:Soup Thai

This means that Tom Yum doesn’t have to be reserved only for seafood lovers.

Vegetarians and diners who prefer chicken or paneer can enjoy the same aromatic Thai flavours.

Clear Tom Yum or Creamy Tom Yum?

Another choice is the style of soup.

Our Clear Tom Yum delivers the classic hot and sour character of the dish.

For diners who enjoy something richer, we also offer a version with a thicker base created with coconut milk.

The flavour remains unmistakably Tom Yum, but the experience is different.

Some diners love the sharp, bright character of the clear version.

Others enjoy the richness of the creamy version.

The good news?

There is no wrong answer.

One of Our Most Frequently Ordered Soups

A recent guest visited Thong Thai Bistro for the second time and specifically mentioned our Tom Yum Soup.

That always means something to us.

Anyone can enjoy a dish on their first visit.

But when someone returns and orders again, that’s a different kind of compliment.

It tells us that the experience stayed with them.

And that’s exactly why Chef June continues to insist that every bowl should start from scratch.

Fresh Ingredients. Made to Order. One Bowl at a Time.

Our philosophy in the kitchen is simple.

We don’t try to take shortcuts simply because something takes longer.

Fresh ingredients require more work.

Preparing food to order requires more effort.

But good Thai food is about layers of flavour.

And for Chef June, there is only one way to make Tom Yum.

Start from scratch.

If you’re looking for Tom Yum Soup in Singapore, we invite you to try ours—and choose exactly how spicy you want it.

Why Fresh Ingredients Cost More – The Story Behind Every Plate at Thong Thai Bistro

Why Fresh Ingredients Cost More – The Story Behind Every Plate at Thong Thai Bistro

Many guests notice that our prices are a little higher than the average Thai restaurant in Singapore.

They’re right.

But there is a reason.

At Thong Thai Bistro, we don’t compete on being the cheapest. We compete on serving the freshest and most authentic Southern Thai food we possibly can.

Fresh Vegetables Every Single Day

Every morning, fresh vegetables arrive at our restaurant.

We don’t buy vegetables that have already been washed, cut or prepared for convenience. Chef June prefers selecting whole vegetables because freshness directly affects both flavour and texture.

If the vegetables don’t meet our standards, we reject them.

Even though our daily orders often fall below suppliers’ minimum order quantities, we still pay extra delivery charges because receiving fresh produce every day is more important than saving a few dollars.

Fresh Seafood Isn’t Ordered Blindly

Seafood is one area where Chef June refuses to compromise.

Instead of relying on a single supplier, we personally source seafood from wherever we find the freshest quality available.

That sometimes means paying more.

It sometimes means changing suppliers.

And occasionally it means saying “no” to seafood that simply doesn’t meet our expectations.

Our loyalty has never been to suppliers.

Our loyalty has always been to our guests.

Every Dish Starts Only After You Order

Fresh ingredients are only part of the story.

Every curry, stir-fry, soup and salad is prepared after your order is placed.

Vegetables are cut fresh.

Seafood is cooked fresh.

Herbs are added at exactly the right moment.Climbing wattle egg

Nothing sits under heat lamps waiting to be served.

Why We Do It

Could we reduce our costs?

Of course.

We could purchase cheaper ingredients.
We could prepare vegetables days in advance.
We could simplify our cooking.

But then the food would no longer represent Chef June’s family recipes or the authentic Southern Thai flavours we want to share.

That isn’t the restaurant we set out to build.

At Thong Thai Bistro, we believe every guest deserves food prepared with fresh ingredients, careful attention and genuine pride.https://thongthaibistro.com/celebrations-group-dining/

Sometimes quality costs a little more.

We believe it’s worth every bite.

Home-Cooked Thai Food Is More Than a Style—It’s Our Philosophy

Home-Cooked Thai Food in Singapore – Why Family Recipes Taste Different

One of the greatest compliments any chef can receive is hearing that their food tastes like something prepared at home.

Recently, one of our guests described the food at Thong Thai Bistro as “home cooked style; what would you serve to your family at home.”

For Chef June, that single sentence perfectly captures everything she has worked towards.

Unlike many restaurant chefs, Chef June never trained in a culinary school or spent years working in commercial kitchens. Her education came from somewhere far more personal—her family home in Southern Thailand.

The recipes served at Thong Thai Bistro were taught by her parents and grandmother. They are recipes that have been enjoyed around family dining tables for generations, using fresh herbs, authentic spices and ingredients chosen with care.

That philosophy continues today.Happy thai food

Our vegetables are delivered fresh every day because freshness matters. Our seafood is carefully selected because we believe quality ingredients need very little disguise. Every dish is cooked only after you order, allowing each ingredient to retain its natural flavour and texture.

Whether you’re enjoying a comforting Green Curry, a bowl of Tom Yum Soup, Stir-fried Kale, or ending your meal with Mango Sticky Rice, our goal remains the same—to prepare food that we would proudly serve to our own family.

Many guests visit us looking for authentic Thai food in Singapore.

Many return because they discover something even more meaningful: the warmth and comfort of a genuine home-cooked meal.

If you’re looking for Thai food that feels personal rather than manufactured, we would love to welcome you to Thong Thai Bistro.

Why Chef June Was Never Meant to Be a Chef—Yet Became One Anyway

Why Chef June Was Never Meant to Be a Chef—Yet Became One Anyway

People often assume that every chef dreamed of becoming one.

That wasn’t Chef June’s story.

She never trained in a culinary school or worked in professional kitchens. Everything she knows about cooking came from growing up in Southern Thailand, learning family recipes from her parents and grandparents.

What truly makes her special isn’t formal training.

It’s her personality.

Long before Thong Thai Bistro existed, we were preparing for our wedding. One task seemed simple—buying our wedding bands. We spent days visiting jewellery shops, comparing designs, discussing details, and trying to find the perfect rings. Only after giving it careful thought did June decide that the ring she wanted was one we had seen much earlier.

That experience taught me something important.

June never settles until she believes something is exactly right.Tom Yum Clear

Today, that same meticulous approach defines the kitchen at Thong Thai Bistro.

She checks the freshness of seafood. She insists on vegetables being delivered daily. She tastes, adjusts, and balances every curry until the flavours are exactly as she remembers from home in Southern Thailand.

She isn’t trying to cook quickly.

She is trying to cook correctly.

Perhaps that’s why guests often describe our food as authentic. They aren’t simply tasting recipes. They’re experiencing the care, patience, and attention to detail that Chef June brings to every meal.

At Thong Thai Bistro, authenticity isn’t created by a recipe alone.

It’s created by the person behind the recipe.

For reservation.

Celebrate Together: Why Thong Thai Bistro Is Perfect for Group Dining and Special Occasions

Celebrate Together: Why Thong Thai Bistro Is Perfect for Group Dining and Special Occasions

When people think about choosing a restaurant for a celebration, they often focus on the food. While delicious food is essential, a memorable gathering is about much more than what’s on the table.

At Thong Thai Bistro, we’ve been fortunate to host birthdays, anniversaries, family reunions, business lunches, corporate dinners, Rotary meetings, team celebrations, farewell parties, and friends catching up after years apart. Every gathering is unique, but they all have one thing in common—bringing people together over authentic Southern Thai food.

Our restaurant has been designed to accommodate both intimate dinners and larger groups. With seating across two indoor levels and an outdoor patio, we can comfortably welcome up to 70–80 guests while still maintaining the warm, family-friendly atmosphere that our regular diners appreciate.Discuss meeting

Food also plays an important role in successful group dining. Our menu includes fresh seafood, chicken, vegetarian dishes, tofu, and paneer options, making it easy for guests with different preferences to enjoy the same meal together. Every dish is prepared fresh to order using Chef June’s family recipes from Southern Thailand, ensuring authentic flavours in every bite.

Convenience is another reason many groups choose us. At Thong Thai Bistro, we don’t simply provide a place to eat—we provide a place where people create memories.

We look forward to helping you celebrate your next special occasion.

More Than a Meal: The Atmosphere That Brings People Together

People often compliment the atmosphere at Thong Thai Bistro.

But what does “great atmosphere” really mean?

For us, it has never been about expensive interior design or trendy decorations. A warm atmosphere is created by the people who walk through our doors and the memories they make together.

Every week, we welcome guests celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, family reunions, business lunches, corporate dinners, team gatherings, and friends meeting after work. Some are introducing loved ones to authentic Southern Thai food for the first time. Others are returning because Thong Thai Bistro has become part of their own family traditions.

Our dining spaces are designed to suit many occasions. Whether you’re planning an intimate dinner for two, a family celebration, or a larger group event, we want every guest to feel comfortable and unhurried.

Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, organising a company gathering, meeting old friends, or simply enjoying dinner with family, we hope every visit leaves you with memories worth sharing.

Why We Still Love Running Our Family Restaurant Every Day

Why We Still Love Running Our Family Restaurant Every Day

People often see the smiles in a restaurant, but they don’t always see the work behind them.

Running a family restaurant means early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays spent serving guests. There are deliveries to check, fresh ingredients to prepare, tables to set, and countless details that happen long before the first diner arrives.

So why do we keep doing it?

Because we love it.

Chef June has never seen cooking as just a profession. The recipes she prepares today are the same ones she learned from her parents and grandparents in Southern Thailand. Every dish is an opportunity to share a part of her family’s traditions with someone new.

For Indi, the greatest joy is meeting people. Every table is different. Some guests are trying authentic Thai food for the first time, while others are searching for the flavours they remember from their travels in Thailand. Helping guests choose dishes they’ll enjoy and seeing their reactions is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.Tom Yum Soup

Of course, there are tiring days. Like every family business, we face challenges. But then a guest leaves with a smile, returns for another visit, or writes a kind review saying we made their first meal in Singapore memorable.

Moments like these remind us why we opened Thong Thai Bistro.

Our goal has never been simply to serve food. We want every guest to feel welcomed, cared for, and leave with a genuine taste of Southern Thailand.

If our guests leave happier than when they arrived, then we know we’ve done our job.  Book here for your reservations or takeaway.

Why We Don’t Use Professional Food Photography

Why We Don’t Use Professional Food Photography

In today’s world, it’s common to see restaurant photos that have been professionally styled, carefully lit, and heavily edited before they appear online.

At Thong Thai Bistro, we’ve taken a different approach.

Since opening, we have never organised a professional food photoshoot. The photos on our website, Google Business Profile, and social media are largely taken during normal service. Many are captured by our guests, while others are simple photographs of the dishes exactly as they are prepared and served.

We believe that honesty builds trust. When you browse our menu or website, we want you to see the real food that will arrive at your table—not a version created just for a camera.

That philosophy reflects how we cook. Chef June prepares every dish fresh to order using family recipes from Southern Thailand. Fresh seafood, quality ingredients, and authentic flavours matter more to us than creating a perfect studio image.

OuMango sticky rice r guests often tell us that the dishes look just like the photos they saw before visiting. For us, that is one of the best compliments we can receive.

Beautiful food does not need to be staged. When quality ingredients and traditional recipes come together, the food speaks for itself.

We invite you to visit Thong Thai Bistro and experience authentic Southern Thai cuisine exactly as you see it—real, fresh, and prepared with care. Or you can order online for take away or delivery.

Why Simple Food Is Often the Best Food

Why Simple Food Is Often the Best Food

One of the nicest compliments we receive is also one of the simplest.

Guests often tell us, “The food is very nice.”

It may sound like a few ordinary words, but for us, they mean everything.

At Thong Thai Bistro, we believe great food does not need to be complicated. It begins with authentic recipes, quality ingredients, and respect for traditional cooking.

Chef June learned to cook from her parents and grandparents in Southern Thailand. These are family recipes that have been enjoyed around the dining table for generations. Instead of changing them to follow trends, we stay true to the flavours that made them special in the first place.

Green Curry with seafoodFreshness is equally important. Seafood is carefully selected, herbs and vegetables are chosen with care, and every dish is prepared fresh to order. We believe there is no shortcut to authentic flavour.

Southern Thai cuisine is known for its balance. Sweet, sour, salty, spicy, and savoury flavours come together naturally, allowing every ingredient to play its part without overpowering the others.

Whether it is our Tom Yum Soup, Threadfin Fish in Southern Curry Paste, Jumbo Prawns, Pad Thai, or our famous Mango Sticky Rice, our goal remains the same: to serve food that guests will remember and return for.

Sometimes the best compliment is also the simplest. When a guest says our food is “very nice,” we know we have stayed true to what matters most.
